Chances are that the person who ends up buying your house will drive by at least once when making the decision. Below are some ways to make your home more appealing upon first glimpse:
- Make sure house numbers are easy to read
- Replace or paint the front door
- Check to see if your railings are sturdy and freshly painted
- Clean windows
- Touch up or repaint the home’s exterior
- Fix loose shutters
- Straighten or replace loose or bent gutters
- Replace old windows with new, energy efficient vinyl or wood windows

Whether it is wood, aluminum, iron, resin or wicker and rattan, the right outdoor furniture helps us weather the outdoors well and protects us from sun and rain.
No longer a luxury, making the most of our outdoor space is an essential element of a wonderful summer. Thus, we need to furnish these spaces well.
As with any furniture, quality is of utmost importance; however, quality differences are not always so easy to determine given the number of materials, processes and manufacturers in the marketplace.
| Below are some tips on what to look for when purchasing outdoor furniture: |
- Substantial weight almost always indicates good quality.
- The finish should be rich and even. If the surface is textural, it too should be even. If the piece is metal, look for a durable powder coated finish (which is baked on rather than painted on).
- Check out the cushions and make sure they are made with a fade and weather resistant fabric.
- All straps, if present, should be tight and return quickly to their original seat when you sit on them.
- Welds should be smooth and barely noticeable.
- Look for subtle details that set your piece apart and buy what you love. If need be, purchase one piece at a time so that in the end, you will have quality pieces that last forever.

OUTDOOR LIVING IDEAS
One of the most cost effective ways you can customize your home to meet your needs and tastes is good landscaping and hardscaping.
While always a good idea to consult a professional for large scale projects, more modest sized projects can be handled in a variety of ways, from hiring a landscape consultant on an hourly basis, or by simply stopping by your home improvement or garden center.
I have just completed painting my home’s exterior, replacing its shutters, building a portico and railing, replacing my front door and handle set and adding composite window boxes. I will start phase 2 of my landscaping project soon and plan to hire a professional for a bluestone patio and path that will be installed.
| Some ideas for you to consider this spring: |
- Outdoor Entertaining – Once your landscaping is good, you have an ideal venue for entertaining outdoors. Consider adding an outdoor dining table and chairs for impromptu barbeques and other gatherings.
- Water Features – Whether a koi pond, watergarden or fountain, try using water as a focal point in your landscaping this summer. Not only visually beautiful, the sound of the cascading water is soothing as well.
- Children’s Play Equipment – Site a swing set and slide away from the street and in plain view of a window. Keep the sandbox covered when not in use to keep out animals and debris.
- Vegetable and Herb Gardens – plant these to guarantee you the freshest possible veggies and to get some exercise out of doors. Even if you don’t have a lot of space, you can plant herbs in pots to add to your favorite recipes.
- Outdoor Lighting – This is central to good landscape design. Use motion lights for security, floodlights for parking areas, spotlights to highlight trees and fountains and low voltage or indirect lighting for accenting patios and decks.
- House Number – Plan for a well-lit, easy to read house number so everyone can find your home.
- Front Entrance – This area warrants special attention as it is the first area people see when visiting your home. Any money spent improving this area contributes to the homes curb appeal and adds instantly to the resale value of the property.
- Patios and Walkways – Try curving these around your garden and trees instead of making them straight or rectangular – a little more expensive, but worth it.
- Plant Selection – Always consider the maintenance required and the future growth of the plants you purchase so they don’t end up looking overgrown.
